Good afternoon everyone! Can you believe it’s Thursday already? This week has flown by! It’s been a somewhat relaxing one over here, just trying to recover and “rejuvenate” myself. Every once in a while when I really get busy, things tend to start to slip away. Then something triggers in my body and I realize that I need to step back for a moment and just let myself and everything be. I’ve really done that this week and have noticed quite a bit of changes! More on that in the Sunday Afternoon Chat.
For now, onto today’s book review! I am going to be reviewing A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro. You can find a description of the book HERE.
I hope it would come as no surprise that I am a massive Sherlock Holmes fan. I started reading these books at a “young-ish” age and they captivated me. I became obsessed with not only the actual cases, but the dynamics of the Holmes/Watson relationship. After finishing the classic set, I decided to delve head first into adaptations. I’ve seen just about every movie and TV adaptation there is out there, but have only read a handful of the novels. Brittany’s adaptation captured my attention because it is not typical.
Our two main characters are descendants of the great Sherlock and Watson. Charlotte Holmes is Sherlock’s great-great-great-granddaughter and Jamie is the same for Dr. Watson. I loved that Brittany “cast” Sherlock’s descendant to be a female as that is something new for the genre. We see Watson fluctuate in adaptations, but never Sherlock. I absolutely loved the new dynamic it brought to the age old relationship of the characters.
In addition to loving the characters, I loved the way the story was told. It was typical Sherlock & Watson, but at the same time not at all. The one way it stayed true was not truly knowing who did it. You kept getting hints at this person or that person, but until everything was laid out on the table, you really weren’t sure. I absolutely loved the classic “who done it” take with the modern twist of genders.
Once I finished this book, I had to look up and see when the next book was set to be released which happened to be just a couple days ago. I will definitely be picking that one up soon as I think this is one of my favorite takes on the classic story!
