I belong to a local book club where I live and on the Facebook group page a picture was recently posted with a question. The picture is a quote that you may have seen before: “If you don’t like to read, you just haven’t found the right book.”. The question that was posed was whether we agreed with that statement or not and it really got me thinking (been doing a lot of that this week!). After quite a long Facebook response and some more thinking, I decided to do a little blog post to continue on with my thoughts and experiences.
My response is quite simple: No. While I do believe that there is a book or genre out there that will excite and call to anyone, I do not believe that the right book will instantly turn a person into a “reader”. Let me explain…
I, obviously, am an avid reader. I have a very intense love of reading and just books in general. I grew up in a home that had a large home library chock full of books and was reading before I can even remember. I also grew up with an intense love of learning which I believe furthers my love of reading. I spent most of my “free time”, which for me was time that I was not in school, either playing sports or reading. I was an athlete and worked on furthering my abilities in the sports that I did and the rest of the time I was home, reading. I think the idea of being able to go to another place, or live in a fantasy world, while reading really roped me in. I can’t pinpoint ONE book that started my love, but rather a collection of sorts from a few different genre’s (you can see that list HERE).
My husband is not as much of a reader. He does read on occasion and knows exactly what books he will like, non fiction war history, but I would not say he is a “reader” and he would probably agree with that. He reads the news daily and will pick up a book every once in a while. He loves playing sports, hunting, fishing, and being outside 99% of his day. He does do required reading for school and for his job, but has only read maybe a handful of books outside of those required readings. As I said, he knows exactly what book that he will enjoy and when he is in the frame of mind to read, he will pick up a book, but it is not his first way to pass the time. He is simply just not a reader and that is completely ok!
I know people who have found “that” book that they absolutely love, but don’t like to really read. The fact of finding the “right” book doesn’t always turn someone into a reader or instill a love or desire to read.
Overall, while I think finding the right book may help turn someone who doesn’t like to read into someone who does like to read, some people just aren’t readers. There are those who don’t like to read and would simply rather do something else with their time EVEN IF they have found a book that they love. It’s completely alright and is a little refreshing!
What are your thoughts? Do you agree with the idea that finding the right book will turn someone into a reader? Will it allow someone to enjoy or like to read? I would love to hear your thoughts?
