Good evening everyone! It’s been a while since I didn’t put up my Sunday Afternoon Chats post. Sunday I was spending some much needed time with my family and just relaxing for the day. I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and a Happy Mother’s day! Today I am going to be doing a book review for a book that I actually finished a while ago. It is a surprising review for me to write as I did not expect to feel the way I am feeling about this book.
Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge. You can click here to get the description of the book. This book, in it’s basic form, is touted as a Beauty and the Beast retelling and is marketed as a young adult fantasy book.
I honestly did not like this book. At all. I am not a fan. I bought this book because it was a retelling and the concept of the story seemed interesting. I was intrigued by the world and the story seemed like one I would enjoy. Plus the book cover is beautiful. To be honest, the story seemed dull at times and much of the world and bits of the story were very rushed and confusing. It seemed like the author was trying to put a lot of details in short spots, but then other portions were dragged along.
As far as the characters go, I felt like our main female character was immature, whiny and did not show much growth throughout the story. Our main male character showed slightly more growth, however at times he also appeared immature despite being portrayed as a more mature character. I didn’t really feel like the characters change on a whole or truly developed. It all seemed more superficial or face value change.
Overall this was not a read that I enjoyed and not a series that I will continue on with. Have you read Cruel Beauty? If so, what were your thoughts?
