Good morning everyone! I hope that your week has gotten off to a great start. I am starting to catch up on the book reviews that I haven’t put up just yet and am looking forward to sharing my thoughts on some of my recent reads with you. I am starting off with one of my favorites of 2016, Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.
I have to say, I absolutely loved Illuminae and I can say I may have loved Gemina even more! This trilogy really has a way of sucking you in and keeping you wanting more. This was a book that I stayed up late to continue reading and could not put down. I thoroughly enjoyed the new characters we follow and loved the glimpse we got of the previous characters.
Gemina follows a different set of characters on a different ship set in the same world as Illuminae. We are introduced to a new level of intrigue and we get to see a new side of the world that Jay and Amie have crafted. While the characters and setting are different, we still get the same incredible story and writing as before.
As in Illuminae, Gemina is told through a medium of documents, instant messages, drawings and other mediums. There is not a lot of “block text”, which in this case works so well for the story. I love how it can add a feeling of being “disjointed” within the story, similar to how the characters themselves feel at times. The drawings are absolutely beautiful and I feel add another level of depth to the story that allows the reader to truly be swept up with what is going on.
Overall I absolutely loved this book. It was not a letdown and did not feel like a “middle” book. It really takes the world and overall story to another level and I cannot wait to read the conclusion (too bad I don’t think it will be out until the end of this year)!
