Yep, you read the title correctly…I purchased an e-reader and I have used it. I even took it with me on our recent family vacation!
I should start by saying this is not my first attempt at using an e-reader. I had a nook a long long time ago and I have an iPad that I have used to read as well. I just struggle with using an e-reader because it does not feel like a book in my hands. I love the weight of a book in my hands when I’m reading, turning each page as I delve deeper into the story. Those feelings cannot be replicated by any e-reader. Not too mention when I sit down to read I like to be able to disconnect from any form of technology (the only exception being the time’s I like to listen to music while reading).
I’ve been eyeing the Kindle Paperwhite for a little while and even more so since my second son was born. When he is up in the middle of the night to eat it is difficult to read a book for numerous reasons, one being not having enough light. I liked the paperwhite as it has one function- reading. It also has built in lights that will light up the screen just enough to read, but not too much that anyone else is affected. While that was nice, I struggled with the decision as I knew that buying an e-reader would not stop me from buying physical books.
After quite a long time of back and forth on the decision to get an e-reader, I ended up taking the plunge. I’m not necessarily going to get into specifics of the Kindle itself, other than it is the Paperwhite. It is a lightweight compact e-reader that would be easy to take anywhere. I decided the best test would be to take it with me on our family vacation. I knew I would be doing a lot of reading and I figured this would be the fastest easiest way to determine my feelings.
One HUGE downfall (and the technology reason that I cannot switch to an e-reader, not the emotional/mental reason) is the little message I got that read “Battery Low”. What?! My books never die or have battery issues!! I was very sad when I got the message (although I knew it wouldn’t be long before it came) and my initial reaction was not “pretty”.
Overall, I do like the e-reader! It is nice to have something so compact and easy to simply throw in my bag as I head out the door. It is also to be able to read in the middle of the night without waking my husband up or keeping our youngest awake too long. Even so, I will not be giving up my physical book copies anytime soon!!
