Oh my gosh… I can rarely say that I have a new obsession, but I have a new obsession. At this point I have only truly obsessed book wise over Harry Potter, Outlander, and Pride and Prejudice, but now I am adding Illuminae to the list, because really, it was fantastic!
Before I get too far into this, Click HERE for a synopsis of the book (and HERE for Random House’s page for Illuminae). I will also note, this will be a spoiler free post, because honestly, you need to read the book and I refuse to give any major details!
This books starts out with a break up (cliche for any review about this book) and takes the reader on such a wondrous adventure with twists and turns on every page. The reader goes through so many heart stopping points that can take their breath away. The storyline is fantastic and while it can lead itself to being a “Young Adult” read, I would also recommend it to anyone who just wants a thriller with science fiction tendencies. To touch on the Science Fiction aspect, I feel that it does exist in the storyline, but it is not the sole basis of the book. I thought it was more of a action/thriller/mystery read that just happened to have Science Fiction elements to it.
The other major selling point of the book, outside of just the storyline, is the artwork and the way the book is written. First of all, the hardback cover and dust jacket is amazing; simply beautiful and a work of art in and of itself. The whole book is written in snippets from instant message chats to emails to camera transcription. There are areas that are crossed out and some areas that are unique art that work perfectly in the story. I thought that the way the story is written (in the chats, with the pictures, etc) would be the biggest problem I would have, but it actually was one of my favorite parts of the story! I felt like it really added a lot and did not come even close from detracting from my reading experience.
Overall, if I could give this more than 5/5 stars I would! I can’t even put everything about this book into words, it is simply that good!! I’m only bummed that I’m now going to have to wait a while for the next book to come out (this book is part of a trilogy).
