Good morning everyone! I hope that your week is going well and going by fast! It’s almost the weekend! This morning I am going to be doing a Book Review for you on a book that I’ve been thinking about getting for a while, but a rip over the summer really clinched the decision for me. Living where we live we are we are surrounded by history and as someone who loves history, I have been excited! Over the summer when my In Laws came out to visit, we went over to Ford’s Theatre and that trip sealed my decision to delve back into the Lincoln Assassination. This book is my first foray back into this turbulent time (yes, back into. I’ve read a book about the assassination before).
First off, HERE is a link to a full description of the book. The book is Killing Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard.
I want to start by saying that I did really enjoy this book. It delivered factual information and gave a good full description of the events from the last days of the civil war through the executions of the criminals. I liked that it didn’t just start with the day before the assassination but rather with the ending of the Civil War.
My biggest problem with this book (and it was not a deal breaker, just something that I want to note) was that this was hailed as a non fiction account that read as a historical thriller/fiction. I did not find this to be the case. This was a very enjoyable read, but I would not go so far as to say it read as historical fiction or a thriller. Even without accounting for the fact that this is a real event, the store was just presented in a very factual manner and was very matter-of-fact.
I did very much enjoy this read and I’m looking forward to picking up a couple more books about the time period and the assassination. Have you read any Lincoln or Civil War books?
