Good morning everyone! We are over the halfway mark of the week and just shy of Friday! I hope it’s been a good week for you! This morning I’m going to do a a post all about re-reading books.
I’m very big on re reading books. I love to delve back into a story and see how I feel on all of my subsequent reads. Some books I read over again once a year, others I may put down for many years and then suddenly want to pick them back up.
So, what prompts me to pick a book back up? Typically this falls into two categories, either I want to feel that nostalgia or feel the way the book made me feel originally again, OR I want a second chance to see how I feel about the book that I read earlier. Most of my re reads fall into the first category and I simply have a very strong sentiment attached to that book. In this case, no matter how many times I read the book I still get that same feeling. In the second category, these are typically books that I was unsure of or felt a strong way about when I originally read the book. I don’t always finish them the second time around, but I like to give it one more shot later on (if I’ve kept them) just to see if there was any change to my opinion. As we as individuals and readers grow, our thoughts and taste continue to change and evolve. You would be surprised at an opinion that you amy have had on a book could change as you grow.
Another thing that prompts me is the thought of picking up on little things that you don’t always spot your first read. I love when I re read a book and find a little bit of information that I didn’t point out before. It doesn’t matter if this information is large, small, relevant, or irrelevant, I still love it. It makes the thought of re reading the book so much more magical. It is similar to when you re watch a movie (although in some cases better), you almost always spot something you didn’t see the first time around.
How often do I re read books? This really depends on the book. For example, the Harry Potter series and the All Souls Trilogy I will re read once a year. The Ladies Paradise, I re read every few years. Sherlock Holmes is a story by story at completely random times. It really depends on times of year and what I’m in the mood for. If it is a book that I am re reading to see if my opinion has changed, I try to push that out for at least a year. I find that that is a good starting amount of time to let myself decide if a) I want to re read it and b) whether enough time has passed that the original opinions wont affect my re read. I find that taking both of those factors into consideration really allows me to approach opinionated re reads with a much clearer perspective and knowing that I really do want to see if my thoughts have changed.
Are there books that I love that I will not re read? Yes, of course! I don’t re read every book that I fall in love with, I would never read any new books if I did. I try to limit my re reads to my all time favorites, although even some of those don’t necessarily get a re read. For example, I loved and obsessed over The Illuminae Files, but I don’t know when I will re read it. It is one of my favorites, but I can’t see a re read happening in the near future. There are some books that I don’t want to re read because I don’t want to ruin that first read feeling I had. Books that I enjoyed so immensely and took me by surprise, that I feel re reading would ruin those feelings. An example of this would be Me After You by Jojo Moyes. That book swept me away ( I read it in a single day when I had a newborn) and I think that a re read could almost ruin those intense original feelings that I had.
So those are my personal thoughts on re reading books! I would love to hear your thoughts! Let me know if there are books that you re read or if you are very against re reading a book!
