Good morning! I’ve got a book review up this morning for a recent read that I was a little disappointed in. This is a first for me for a book in this genre and time period, but more on that in the review. I am going to be talking about Rival to the Queen by Carolly Erickson.
As always, you can find a full description HERE.
As I stated, this book represented a first for me- disappointment in a book from the Historical Fiction genre within the Tudor/Elizabethan time period. I love both Historical Fiction (of any time period) and I am especially fascinated with the Tudor dynasty and Elizabethan England. So much upheaval and quite fascinating to learn about even aside from fictional accounts. When I saw this novel, I figured it would be right up my alley! I knew all about Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley and I wanted to read some fiction from that time.
I think that when it comes to Historical Fiction, I like to have much much longer novels that can really take the time and delve deep into the story. This novel felt rushed and almost just breezed over most of the events. I felt that I did not get a sense of the events, nor of most of the characters that I didn’t already know from history. Towards the end of the novel, I actually had to force myself to finish it as I simply was starting to get annoyed with the characters and story.
I am not sure whether or not this was a one off for this author or if this is the case for all of her books. I may give her another chance in the future, but for this book, I was not impressed.
Have you read Rival to the Queen or any of Carolly Erickson’s novels? What are your thoughts?
