I have been on a roll the first half of this month with my reading! I am so pleased that I am getting through quite a few good books and am looking forward to sharing all of my thoughts with you!! Today I am going to be discussing The Last of August by Brittany Cavallaro.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series and was excited when the second book came out, hoping that it would continue on a good path! I have to say, overall, this book did not disappoint! When looking at the story as a whole between the characters, plot, and writing I found it a very enjoyable fast read. I was interested to see how Brittany handled the characters (or how the characters handled her) now that they were away from the confines of school on a winter break.
I find this story to be very much character driven rather than plot driven. While reading, you can see the outlines and structure of the story, but you very much get the feeling that the characters are really driving the bus, so to speak. It is so much fun, because as a reader, I wonder later if the character had chosen to do just one thing differently, how would that have affected the outcome? I find that it also makes the story really start to come alive and keep the reader on their toes.
The only bone I have to pick with this particular story is the romance portion of the story. Our main characters started to get on my nerves just a smidge when it came to talking and expressing feelings. I understood most of the backstory and the reasoning, but this portion does get a little over used I find- although that could also be because I try to be a fairly straight forward, don’t beat around the bush kind of person. I think aside from that, it was nice to see our characters in a different light and a different comfort zone!
Overall, this book was really enjoyable and a good second installment in her series. The third book isn’t going to be out until 2018, so that’s a little bit of a wait, but also a good amount of time to read the first two books if you haven’t!
