It is time to start catching up on my book reviews! One or two of these might be shorter reviews as I did not and still do not have too much to say about them. This one is going to be one of those.
First off, you can get a complete summary of this book HERE.
I was very interested in reading this book as I had seen it in several posts about books to read if you love Harry Potter as well as adult HP type stories. I will also note that I did see a couple reviews that said not to go into this book expecting something like Harry Potter, so I kept an open mind to this book and the story.
I honestly felt that this story was not entirely original. It brought elements from Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia and one other book that I can’t seem to pin down into the story. While I thought that the book and story came together OK, I just couldn’t get into the characters or story because I felt overtime I hit a new development I could pinpoint that development to another story. I had relatively decent hopes for this book and series, but I do not think I will continue on with it. I liked the main character and found him to be pretty realistic, however most of the rest of the characters I found to be incredibly unrealistic. Maybe that’s because of who my friends are or where I grew up, but yea couldn’t relate to any of the characters, nor were the supporting characters realistic to me.
I would say that this is NOT an adult Harry Potter nor would I really say that you should read this if you loved Harry Potter. I actually almost think the opposite. Harry Potter readers would instantly pinpoint those aspects of the story and I don’t think that they would like the take on the world building and magic use.
Overall I will not be continuing this series and actually look forward to a potential unhaul of this book. I liked it alright, but I doubt I will read it again or want to hold on to it.
