Good morning everyone! Today I wanted to talk about people who have either inspired my reading, allowed me to delve much deeper into a book, or have simply nudged me along in reading. Most of these are pretty obvious, but I think it is still nice to hear about how someone got into reading and who helped continue that joy for them.
The first people who really got me into reading are, of course, my parents. I grew up in a home with dedicated spaces for books. We always had a large library and large selection of books in the house and while we may not have always seen eye to eye on what I should read, they really fostered and supported my love of reading. Both my parents are avid readers and to this day we still talk about books and share recommendations.
The second person/set of people who really helped foster my reading are my paternal grandparents. My grandmother always listened when I rambled about a book and in return I would read a book along with her. Some of my fondest and earliest memories of my grandfather was him in his reclining chair either reading the newspaper or a book and me endlessly pestering him about either. While they may not have had a full collection/large variety of books like I had access to in my own home, the books that they did have were wonderful in their own ways.
The next set of of people who helped foster my love, delve deeper into a book and really continued to nudge my reading along, were two of my high school English teachers. I was very lucky in my Junior and Senior years of high school to have not only some of the best school teachers of my life, but two teachers who really allowed me to go about my work and reading in my own way. I don’t necessarily read/analyze in a linear way and it took me a long time to be comfortable with simply writing an analytical essay. They allowed me to “do things my way” until I became more comfortable with my writing voice when it came to analyzing and writing “proper” essays. I don’t think that I would be where I am in terms of writing and analyzing (more than just my book reviews and posts here) if it wasn’t for them.
Beyond that, the people who have continued to nudge me along with reading are friends who have constantly been introducing me to new books and worlds that I can’t get enough of!
I would love to hear from you, who has inspired you to read or has helped foster a love of reading?
